It seems to be a catchphrase these days, but what exactly are 21st Century skills?

These are the 21st century skills that are associated with that phrase:

  • information and communication skills (technological literacy)
  • inventive thinking and problem solving
  • interpersonal and self-direction skills (interactive communication skills)
  • global awareness
  • financial, economic, and business literacy
  • civic literacy

The Partnership for 21st Century Skills is the leading national advocacy organization that promotes the infusion of these skills into education. It is made up of computer, technology, and education companies such as, Dell, AT&T, Scholastic, HP, LEGO, Sesame Street, and Gale among many others. They obviously have much to gain by the promotion of these skills.

The 21st Centuryskills report indicated that the students will need are:

  • Information and communication skills
  • Thinking and problem-solving skills
  • Interpersonal and self-directed skills
  • Global awareness
  • Financial, economic, and business literacy, and developing entrepreneurial skills to enhance workplace productivity and career options
  • Civic literary
  • Academic skills
  • Thinking and reasoning skills
  • Teamwork
  • Proficiency in using technology

In order for students to learn the skills suggested the report, schools will need to support and impliment them into the curriculum as a requirement. They get bits and pieces because the states academic requirements makes it difficult for the students to become proficient in what is recommended to compete in the global world. What has been happening in the country's financial bailout, the lost skills of finance, economics, technolgy, and business ethics need to be required.
